MOBILITH Project: Neolithic Mobility and Lithic Learning Networks

The MOBILITH project investigates how mobility and migration shaped the social fabric of early Neolithic Europe by examining the transmission of flint knapping skills. This interdisciplinary project uses lithic production as a proxy to reconstruct socio-spatial organisation during the transition from the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) to the post-LBK cultures. Spanning four key regions across Europe, the project combines experimental archaeology, technological and use-wear analyses, demographic modelling, and Social Network Analysis (SNA) to identify apprenticeship networks and infer patterns of population movement. By integrating empirical, experimental, and computational approaches, MOBILITH offers a novel framework to quantify mobility and assess its role in cultural change among early agro-pastoral communities. This presentation will outline the project’s research design, interdisciplinary methodology, and expected contributions to current debates on Neolithic connectivity and social dynamics.
