Neolithic ceramic figurines

Neolithic anthopomorphic figurines represent important source of knowledge for the society of the first farmers in Europe. So far, however, they have been studied more from an artistic, typological or religious point of view. Our research focuses on the analysis of objective measurable data. We analyze the composition of the ceramic material, the operational chain of production and use, as well as the way in which they wer discarded and fragmented.

To address these issues, we received a dean's grant in 2021: P-XRF data baseline for the micro-region of Těšetice-Kyjovice - Sutny site of the Lengyel culture, which aims to prepare a database of data on the chemical composition of local clays and then compare it with the chemical composition of figurines.

We are following up on it thanks to the new GAČR project: Neolithic figurines in the light of analytical data. Production technology, use-wear, fragmentation and deposition mechanisms. (NEOFIG DATA) 2022-2024.
